A flyboard is a footplate connected by a hose to a jet ski. The jet ski's engine forces water down through nozzles under your boots, and that thrust lifts you into the air — a few feet on a first attempt, several metres once you find your balance. Riders can also dive back under the surface and resurface, which is closer to what draws most people to try it.

An instructor controls the throttle from the jet ski for the length of the session, so the only thing you're managing is your own balance, not the power.
